Fasting    : : What is Spiritual Fasting?
HIDE

In a purely traditional spiritual sense, fasting is abstaining from solid food for the purposes of mourning, repenting, and seeking the Lord's favor. In rare and radical cases, heroes of the Bible fasted food and liquids, including water. The Bible mentions many kinds fasts of throughout the Old and New Testaments.

If you trust the Lord for your time of fasting, He will lead you on the type of fast that He desires for your particular circumstances and needs. You may fast solid food for the entire 40 days; you may fast one meal a day; you may fast one day a week. Your journey will be unique and can not be compared to anyone else's experience. However, it is important to enter into this sacred time with the Lord earnestly and with a pure heart, hopefully anticipating the journey on which He will lead you. According to your faithfulness and willing spirit, the Lord will bless your intentions and sustain you during your fast.

Please understand that the fasting referred to throughout the Trumpet and Torch website is purely a spiritual discipline; no fasting references are intended for physical, medical, or other purposes. While we believe that the Lord will take you on the type of fast that He intends for you, we encourage you to seek medical guidance before beginning a fast, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or currently suffering an illness or disease.

"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." (Hebrews 11:1).

Fasting    : : Is Fasting Relevant in a Covenant of Grace?
HIDE

Many Christians are unfamiliar with spiritual fasting. Some believe that fasting is an Old Testament tradition neither required nor relevant to the New Testament grace under which we now live. In truth, however, fasting is a necessary though underutilized spiritual discipline that Jesus addressed right along with giving and prayer (reference Matthew 6). Fasting was never replaced, rescinded, or superseded in the New Testament, and it is not just Old Testament legalism. Jesus came to fulfill the Old Testament, not to render it irrelevant. As Randy Alcorn so eloquently stated in Money, Possessions & Eternity, "Being under grace does not mean living by lower standards than the law." In fact, Jesus assumed that we believers would fast. Jesus said, "When you fast" (Matthew 6:16) not "if you fast".

The verses below emphasize that we are saved by grace, not by works. Fasting, like prayer, is a spiritual tool that believers should use not to earn righteousness but to embrace it.

"I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing." (Galatians 2:21)

"For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men." (Romans 14:17-18)

"But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do." (1 Corinthians 8:8)

Fasting    : : Fasting: Superficial or Supernatural?
HIDE

Fasting unto the Lord goes beyond rote, superficial sacrifice of food. Fasting unto the Lord, when done with the proper heart and the proper spirit, cleaves you to the Lord; everything on earth takes a back seat to worshiping and communing with your Heavenly Father. It is about "holding fast" to Him regardless of your circumstances (reference Deuteronomy 10:20, 11:22, 13:4, 30:20; Joshua 22:5, 23:8; 2 Kings 18:6; Psalm 119:31, 139:10; 1 Peter 5:12).

In Jeremiah 14:12, the Lord proclaims, "Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry." His refusal to listen to His people was based on their continued wickedness; their superficial sacrifice meant nothing because they persisted, unrepentant, in sinful behavior. Jesus, too, warned about fasting as an empty, perfunctory ritual. Jesus spoke to the Pharisees about hypocrisy and hardened hearts in Matthew 15:8-11, 18-20: "You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: 'These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. They worship Me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.' Jesus called the crowd to Him and said, 'Listen and understand. What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean', but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean'. ... But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean'. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what make a man 'unclean'. ..."

Fasting    : : Fast Unto the Lord, Not Unto Men
HIDE

Fasting is a sacred and special sacrifice; it is for the Lord, not for human approval or notice. In Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus cautions those who choose to fast for human admiration and approval, "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, Who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

Please understand the spirit of Jesus' message. He is not saying that absolutely no one should know when we are fasting. In fact, it is very important to have a trusted Christian friend or a network of Christian friends who can pray for you while you are fasting. Jesus is cautioning against fasting for the approval and notice of man, just as He cautions against giving for sheer spectacle.

Fasting    : : Are There Different Kinds of Fasts?
HIDE

There are four basic kinds of fasts: absolute, radical, normal, and partial. Below is a brief explanation of each as well as additional important information.

Absolute fast- No food or liquid (not even water) is consumed. Supernatural sustenance is necessary. An absolute fast is VERY, VERY RARE AND VERY, VERY DANGEROUS unless the Lord has specifically and unquestionably called you to this type of divinely protected and sustained fast.

Radical fast- Only water is consumed. A radical fast is also rare and not recommended for long periods of time unless the Lord has specifically and unquestionably called you to this type of fast.

Normal fast- No food is consumed; liquids include water, clear broths, and fruit and vegetable juices.

Partial fast- Some foods and drinks are sacrificed; for example, processed foods, sugary foods, and caffeinated beverages may be eliminated from your daily intake. A Daniel fast (see "Biblical Types of Fasts" link) is an example of a partial fast.

Those whom He calls to absolute and radical fasts (Moses, Elijah, Jesus) are sought for extreme and divine purposes. One who is radically fasting consumes only water; one who fasts an absolute fast ingests nothing - neither food nor water. We do encourage you to test the Spirit (Romans 12:2, 1 Thessalonians 5:21, 1 John 4:1) for confirmation as you sense a call to fast, especially for a radical fast. We do not recommend an absolute fast unless you are absolutely certain that the Lord is calling you to completely abstain from food and drink; biblical heroes who were called to an absolute fast were divinely anointed and supernaturally sustained for the duration of their fast. It is a rare person whom God calls to a radical fast; rarer still is the one He calls for an absolute fast.

More commonly, those convicted to fast undertake a normal fast where no solid foods are consumed, and physical sustenance is provided by broths, and fruit and vegetable juices. Others may participate in a partial fast where some foods and drinks are sacrificed (processed foods, sugary foods, and caffeinated beverages, for example).

As always, we at Trumpet and Torch recommend that you consult your physician before beginning any type of fast. We especially urge you to consult the Great Physician for His discernment and guidance. Expectant mothers, nursing mothers, children, and those with medical concerns may participate in the spirit of fasting while still receiving essential physical nourishment.

Fasting    : : How Do I Fast Unto the Lord in Today's World?
HIDE

Some wonder, "How do I fast while continuing to work, take care of my family, and just live life in general?" When you put the Lord first, He supernaturally and divinely orders your day so that you are able to accomplish the important things according to His will. The urgent no longer overshadows the important, and things that seemed pressing suddenly fall away, no longer significant in His great kingdom plan. This means that the Lord will give you the grace, energy, and sustenance to care for your essential responsibilities while you are fasting. Necessary work and caring for your family fits the category of "essential responsibilities". The key is to prioritize the Lord above all else, to seek His guidance in all things, and to trust Him every step of the way. You must also have the courage and obedience to forsake opportunities and tasks on your list if God's priorities prove different from yours.

"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways," declares the LORD. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Fasting    : : The Compassion of Jesus and the Purpose of this Fast
HIDE

In the account of Jesus' desert temptation, both Matthew and Luke record that, at the end of His 40-day fast, "He was hungry". Jesus, fully man and fully God, experienced every emotion and sensation as His children do: hunger, weakness, tiredness. The significant difference, of course, is that even in His weakened state, Jesus perfectly avoided temptation and sin. He did so by completely relying on the Word of God. Jesus knows that you will feel weak, hungry, sick, and even afraid at times, but He will sustain you in ways you never thought possible. To receive that sustenance, you must persevere in trust and faithfulness.

"Jesus answered, 'It is written: Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.' " (Matthew 4:4)

    Fasting    : : I'm Afraid to Fast!
HIDE

Only through the strength of God and His direction are we truly able to fast in a way that is acceptable and pleasing to Him. He desires that we all experience a deep, abiding relationship that only comes from Him. This intimate walk with God requires faith not fear.

Perhaps you feel overwhelmed by or fearful of fasting. Take it to the Lord in prayer. Then, listen for His still, small voice. No matter in your life is unimportant to Him, and He will guide you. First, though, you have to silence the distractions that often crowd out your time with Him and compete with His voice.

Remember that a Christian spiritual fast is not a contest; you need not compare yourself or your experience to another. It's not the number of days that you fast or even the number of meals that you fast that matters; the Lord honors the act of humbling yourself in true repentance. He wants your heart, not your stomach!

Our faithful God will prepare you for the task that you have been called to. You have been chosen to be in an intimate relationship with Him. This time of feasting on the Word of God is meant to draw you to the feet of Jesus and there you will find the peace that passes understanding.

There is no reason to fear when God is leading, especially when that path leads you out of the darkness and uncertainty of this earthly life and directs you to His very presence and into the embrace of His awesome love. We should not fear this path, but anticipate it with joy and longing for every moment we have to spend with our most gracious Heavenly Father.

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9)

"Offer right sacrifices and trust in the LORD." (Psalm 4:5)

Fasting    : : How Fasting Relates to the The Great Commandment
HIDE

The Great Commandment, as Jesus replied to the Pharisees in Matthew 22:37-38 is to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself."

Fasting, as outlined in Isaiah 58, accomplishes both the first and second greatest commandments and also highlights the "true" fast (indicated by actions representative of Christ's character) as opposed to the "legalistic" fast (indicated by actions representative of arrogant, sinful, and unrepentant human hearts).

Fasting    : : True Fasting as Detailed in Isaiah 58
HIDE 1" 'Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet. Declare to My people their rebellion and to the house of Jacob their sins. 2For day after day they seek Me out; they seem eager to know My ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God. They ask Me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them. 3'Why have we fasted,' they say, 'and You have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and You have not noticed?' 'Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers. 4Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high. 5Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for a man to humble himself? Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed and for lying on sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? 6'Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? 7Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter--when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? 8Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. 9Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and He will say: Here am I. 'If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, 10 if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. 11 LORD will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. 12Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings. 13'If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on My Holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD's holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, 14then you will find your joy in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob. The mouth of the LORD has spoken.' "

Fasting    : : Isn't Fasting Practiced by Other Religions (and By Those with No Religion?)
HIDE Trumpet and Torch promotes only Christian spiritual fasting. Yes, other religions do fast, and yes, some people fast for purposes that have nothing to do with faith of any kind. While some may fast because their beliefs demand the discipline and others may fast for a variety of earthly reasons, Christians fast exclusively unto our Creator God, the Father of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As such, our fasting intentions and efforts are divinely blessed for"... the LORD looks at the heart" (reference 1 Samuel 16:7) and "...motives are weighed by the LORD" (reference Proverbs 16:2).

Fasting    : : Why Fast Now?
HIDE What is so important about fasting at this particular time? There is no record in the Bible that Jesus' disciples fasted during His active earthly ministry, yet Jesus Himself answers that question in Matthew 9:15: "Then John's disciples came and asked Him, 'How is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?' Jesus answered, 'How can the guests of the Bridegroom mourn while He is with them? The time will come when the Bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.'" (See also Mark 2:18-19 and Luke 5:33-35). Fasting is associated with and accompanied by sorrow, repentance, and seeking God's face. When Jesus was with his disciples, there was no need for them to fast! Although believers today have the gift of the Holy Spirit living inside of us, we still patiently and hopefully await the return of Jesus. When He returns, He should find us faithfully serving Him (reference Matthew 24:45-47).

Fasting    : : Corporate and Intercessory Fasting
HIDE You may already be a disciplined and Spirit-filled Christian, but God's kingdom plan extends beyond individuals. Fasting is also an important intercessory tool, especially when done corporately. (Corporate fasting occurs when a body of believers fasts together; intercessory fasting is fasting on behalf of another.) Now, particularly, our nation's moral and spiritual landscape grows bleaker and weaker by the day. Corporate intercessory fasting, when accompanied by prayer, powerfully beseeches God to have mercy on this nation and throughout the world.

    Fasting    : : 2008 Lenten Fast
HIDE We at Trumpet and Torch believe that the Lord has anointed a time of fasting during the 2008 Lenten season. This 40-day call to fast begins on February 6th (Ash Wednesday) and ends on March 16th (Palm Sunday). During this time, regular schedules will be set aside so that each of us may make the Lord the ultimate priority. The Trumpet and Torch website exists and was specifically designed to provide a practical tool, EAT, which, through a daily devotional journey, leads each individual believer into a disciplined lifestyle of seeking God through mealtime. We believe that the resources within this site exist "for such a time as this." (Reference Esther 4:14). We believe that the Lord is calling His Church to awaken and to prepare herself for His return. To that end, each individual believer must step forward in faith and purpose to seek God first, with a complete and undivided heart, and with oneness of soul, mind, and strength (reference Mark 12:30 and Luke 10:27). Then, the Lord's intention to use the Church (the body of Christ) as salt and light in the world (reference Matthew 5:13-16) will accomplish His purpose of spreading the gospel to the four corners of the earth (reference Matthew 28:19-20). Individually, we each must re-establish connection with our Creator Father in order to channel His heart and His will throughout the earth. We are living in the midst of a spiritual famine in our land, and our own lives have become parched by and polluted with the world's agenda; we must be cleansed and refreshed with the power of the Holy Spirit, the living water of the living God. "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." (John 7:37b-38). To allow the Living Water to fully flow within us, we must unclog our hearts and lives from the worldly debris that clutters, crowds, and contaminates the purity and simplicity of His promise. We must pray, as David prayed, for an unadulterated heart, for abiding faithfulness, and for enthusiastic service: "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." (Psalm 51:10). " 'Even now,' declares the LORD, 'return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning. Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and He relents from sending calamity. ...Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a Holy fast, call a sacred assembly...' " (Joel 2:12-13, 15). This is our preparation period for His return. His Bride (the Church) must awaken and dress; we must be consecrated and purified for His arrival. With each individual resolution, a corporate shifting of His Church will occur. As each single heart fully turns to Him, the collective heartbeat of the Church will grow louder and stronger, unified in our bold pronouncement that Jesus is our Lord and Savior! Then, as the Lord promises in Revelation 7:16-17, "Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; He will lead them to springs of Living Water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

Fasting    : : I'm a Parent; How Do I Include My Children in this 40-Day Journey?
HIDE The Trumpet and Torch website provides helpful information and resources for parents who desire to share their journey with their children and instill in them the discipline of feasting upon the Word of God at a young age. This ministry does not endorse restricting or eliminating food from the diet of young children in any way. This website is designed to help believers grow in their intimacy with the Lord by feasting upon the Word of God and prayer. The Lord commanded us to teach these things to our children so that when they grow up they will not depart from them (Deuteronomy 6:4-9; 11:18-21; Proverbs 22:6). Our prayer is that this journey will not only instill in parents the blessings of abiding in Christ, but also raise up a future generation of children who will learn from a very young age the importance of meditating on the Scriptures and praying to their Heavenly Father. Please visit our Family Time resource page for further tools and information.

Fasting    : : This is My First Fasting Experience; What Should I Expect?
HIDE Blessings to you for responding faithfully and obediently to the call to fast and pray! More than just a way to experience a spiritual breakthrough, fasting, in its purest sense, is honoring Holy God by setting aside every earthly encumbrance in order to prioritize Him above all else.
The most important thing is to seek the Lords will and His guidance for your fast. (See Psalm 16:7, 32:8; Isaiah 48:17, 58:11). Not everyone is called to fast in the same way, and, you may be called to modify your fast, especially during extended periods of fasting.

If the Lord calls you to something, He will supernaturally protect and sustain you. If youre doing it in your own strength, however, you do not necessarily have that same Divine covering. Some fleshly weakness is normal, but extreme distress is not.

Make an effort to discern the Lords call from the enemys lie, and recognize the Lords will from your own idea. Do not compare yourself to others; fasting is not a competition. Some may be called to fast only on water, some only on liquids, and some only on healthy solid foods. The Lord can impress any kind of combination of those upon your heart depending upon your particular situation and your particular needs. (Please see Are There Different Kinds of Fasts? in our FAQs as well as Meal Planning on our Family Time page.)

We encourage you to contact us to share your praise reports and prayer requests. Also, please contact us with any additional questions that you may have.

Fasting    : : Legalism and the Liquid Fast
HIDE The essence of a liquid fast is choosing to abstain from eating solid food. Usually, a liquid fast includes things such as water, fruit juice, vegetable juice, and clear broths. Your body still receives nutrition through the juices, but you sacrifice the texture and taste of solid food.

Be cautious of legalizing the liquid fast. Drinking a milkshake, while it can be sipped through a straw, probably does not honor the intention of your fast. Broth served in a bowl, eaten with a spoon is no better or worse than if you drank it. Blending fresh fruits and vegetables into a finer consistency (even adding juice or broth to thin out the mixture) is perfectly fine, as long as the Lord is leading you in that direction.

Some people choose to put protein powders and supplements in their drinks; others do not. Some people completely abstain from sugar and sodium; some modify the amount; some use sugar substitutes. Do not judge what others are doing, but look to the Lord for what He would have YOU do.

Let the Lord lead you; do not let the enemy neutralize your honorable intentions by diverting your focus to the planning and preparation of your food (or drinks!). You do not want to spend more time thinking about what you are (or are not!) going to eat than you spend with the Lord. Focus on praying, meditating upon His Word, and fellowshipping with Him. Do not become paralyzed by the choices of what you should or should not eat. Pray before you choose, submit your choices to the Lord, and use your time wisely with Him.

If you do eat or drink something that you believe is inappropriate, given what the Lord has impressed upon your heart, do not let the enemy convince you that you've blown your fast. You have not! Pray, ask for the Lords guidance and strength, and move forward. The Lord knows your heart (see 1 Samuel 16:7, Psalm 44:21, Luke 16:15, Acts 15:8, Romans 8:27, 1 John 3:20).

Fasting    : : I Feel So Weak! What Should I Do?
HIDE Some fleshly weakness is normal; extreme distress is not. Again, take it to the Lord in prayer, and truly submit to His leading. The Lord is good; He will guide you! Pride is the antithesis of fasting. You do not want to willfully decide for yourself how you are going to fast, and neither do you want to intentionally draw attention to your fast. Falling down the staircase is not a very compelling testimony for fasting unto the Lord!
In Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus cautioned, " 'When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men that they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, Who is unseen; and your Father, Who sees what is done in secret, will reward You.' "

You may have extenuating circumstances, which necessitate a modification of your fast.  If youve been ill, for example, or if you have a physically demanding job, --whatever your circumstances--look to the Lord to lead you to the proper nutritional balance for your particular situation.
Our abstinence of food should not be the focus for us, or for anyone else who is witnessing our Christian walk. Our love of--and complete surrender to--Jesus Christ should be hallmark of our fast and the standard of our lives.

Fasting     : : How to use this website for fasting and prayer
HIDE How to use this website for fasting and prayer

The Lord created us to have a personal relationship with Him. As in any relationship, we must nurture and care for our relationship with the Lord so that it will grow and flourish. Our Lord is always pursuing us, even when we are not actively pursuing Him. He reveals Himself to us in many ways - big and small, in difficulty as well as in blessing - in order to capture our attention and to grow us into His likeness.

EAT is designed to take the believer on a journey, through the simple process of using the traditional mealtime schedule, to build a disciplined lifestyle of spending time with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It seems difficult to believe that we must be "taught" to spend time with the Lord, but the enemy is very deceptive and sly. Many of us live completely unaware of the numerous minutes and hours that are swept away by mindless, idle distractions. The enemy cleverly intends to keep us so busy that we have little time to spend with the One Who created us and loves us above all else.

In the Scriptures, the Lord often used mealtime as a time of teaching and ministering. He continues to use this ordinary and necessary mealtime routine to ignite a desire in us - a craving for Him above all things, even our food. When the Israelites wandered the desert for 40 years, the Lord caused them to hunger and thirst; this purposeful correction disciplined them to seek Him and to put their trust in Him. Today, He still longs for His children to trust Him and to obey His commands.

Jesus said, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind.' This is the first and the greatest commandment" (Matthew 22:37-38). Our entire lives should revolve around Him, and yet, most of us spend more time planning our lives around when we will eat next and what we will eat. How different life would be - spiritually, physically, emotionally, and otherwise - if desired Him like we desire food?

It is our prayer that EAT will encourage you to suspend your usual schedule in order to meet God for breakfast, lunch, and dinner - every meal, every day. Do not skip any meals. Just like missing a physical meal may cause your body to become weak, missing a meal with the Lord weakens you spiritually. Sacrificing physical food is not really the emphasis of this fast. Rather, the priority is holding fast to the Lord and clinging to Him throughout the day. We lay the sacrifice of precious time on the altar so that He may fill us with His Daily Bread.

You may find it difficult to surrender your food to the Lord, and, especially in the beginning, you may first need to fast (surrender) your time. As you grow in the discipline of spending time with the Lord, He will build a desire and a strength that will allow you to set aside your natural food for His completely fulfilling supernatural food.

Take each day as it comes, one meal at a time, and follow God's leading in your life. Do not compare your experience to others. God's purposes for you are unique and specially designed to achieve what He wants to accomplish in your life. Do not succumb to the discouraging voice of the enemy; he wants to captivate every moment of your day and hold your mind hostage with dispiriting and unholy thoughts. Stand firm on the Word that is nourishing you, and be filled with the encouraging voice of your Savior. He is so pleased with your desire to spend time with Him!

As you walk and dine with the Lord, He will reveal Scripture to you; follow His leading and journey there. Linger over them, meditate upon them, and savor them. The devotions in this journal are only a starting point. Consider them to be appetizers - little letters of encouragement offering a taste of what your faithfulness will produce. Please take time to record any words, Scriptures, or names that the Lord impresses upon your heart. You will be grateful for your personal journal at the end of your journey, and it will stand as a written testament of the Lord's transforming work in your life.

Forty days seems like a lot, but - considering the length of a lifetime and in comparison to eternity - it is only a moment in time. The Scriptures record many stories that exemplify how God changed a people and a nation in 40 days. There is something Divinely supernatural about a 40-day time frame, and the Lord can accomplish a lifetime's work through you in that relatively short period of time...

We pray that you do not enter into this journey because of what you hope to achieve or experience. We pray that, above all else, that in 40 days, you will find yourself face to face with your Lord and Savior. We pray that you will be forever spoiled with a hunger and thirst for His righteousness, overflowing with the glory of God and overcome with the desire to lead others to Him.

When you seek Him you will find Him... if you seek Him with all your heart!

"One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple."
-Psalm 27:4
